Drinking beetroot juices before workout makes the brain of older adults perform more efficiently, mirroring the functions of a younger brain, according to a new study.
Beetroot juice is particularly good for you if had before and after exercising. It is a primary ingredient in what is known as a miracle health drink, ABC, comprising apple, beetroot and carrot.
Researchers found that older adults who consumed beetroot juice before engaging in moderately intense exercise demonstrated greater connectivity in brain regions associated with motor function, compared with adults who did not drink beetroot juice before exercising.
Beetroot juice helped strengthen brain’s somatomotor cortex.
They propose that beetroot juice fortifies the somatomotor cortex assist through its nitrate content; its transformation into nitric oxide helps the conveyance of oxygen to the cerebrum.
The research team, including co-author W. Jack Rejeski of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC, says that the increased brain connectivity is seen among the adults who drank beetroot juice was comparable to the connectivity seen in younger adults.
